Lhyfe receives RFNBO certification for four hydrogen sites in Europe

The French company Lhyfe has obtained RFNBO (Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin) certification for three additional production sites in France and Germany. All four of the company’s existing facilities are now certified under the EU’s most stringent standard for green hydrogen. The certification confirms that hydrogen production is powered entirely by renewable energy and meets the requirements of the EU RED III directive as well as the Green Taxonomy.

Largest producer of RFNBO-certified hydrogen in Europe

The four certified sites are: Bouin with 1 MW in Pays-de-la-Loire (France), Buléon with 5 MW in Brittany, Bessières with 5 MW in Occitanie, and Schwäbisch Gmünd with 10 MW in Baden-Württemberg. The Bouin facility is the first hydrogen plant worldwide to be connected directly to a wind farm. Certification came into effect in May 2025. The official inauguration of the Schwäbisch Gmünd site is scheduled for October 2025.

Together, the four sites offer a combined installed capacity of 21 MW and a daily production capacity of up to 8.3 tonnes of green hydrogen. According to Lhyfe, this makes the company Europe’s largest producer of RFNBO-certified hydrogen, based on installed capacity and number of sites. In France, Lhyfe is currently the only provider with RFNBO certification.

Production at the four locations is designed for bulk deliveries. Hydrogen is distributed via Lhyfe’s own fleet of around 70 containers. This infrastructure enables supply to customers across Europe, particularly in industry and mobility sectors. The hydrogen is also available for testing in applications such as combustion, storage in salt caverns, or construction machinery.

Certification strengthens access to funding

RFNBO certification allows Lhyfe’s customers to demonstrate the sustainability of their hydrogen purchases. This provides access to national and European funding programmes that are currently being established.

Lhyfe CEO Matthieu Guesné sees the certification as a strategic advance: “This certification is an important milestone. It confirms the robustness of our business model, our technological and regulatory lead, and above all, that large-scale local production of truly renewable and traceable hydrogen is now possible in Europe.”
