The French hydrogen producer Lhyfe has become the first company in France to deliver hydrogen with the new RFNBO certificate from the EU. The certification confirms compliance with the highest environmental standards in the production of green hydrogen. End of June Lhyfe announced that its production site in Bouin, western France, has been RFNBO-certified since May 23, 2025. This makes Lhyfe the first supplier in France to produce and distribute hydrogen in accordance with the new EU requirements for “Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin” (RFNBO). The first delivery of certified hydrogen took place on May 28, 2025, to Les Sables d’Olonne. As for Germany, Air Liquide’s 20 MW PEM electrolyzer in Oberhausen in April became the first facility to receive RFNBO certification.
The RFNBO certification guarantees that the hydrogen was produced in compliance with strict sustainability criteria. These include the exclusive use of renewable energy, production via electrolysis of water, and full accounting of greenhouse gas emissions over the entire life cycle – including transport.
Customers can now trade the hydrogen produced at these sites as a renewable fuel under the EU’s ISCC (International Sustainability & Carbon Certification) standard and count it toward Germany’s legally mandated greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction quotas. This is particularly relevant for companies in the mobility, refining and chemical sectors.
