The project developer H2Apex and the Danish infrastructure fund Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) have entered into a strategic partnership for a hydrogen project in Lubmin, Germany, supported under the IPCEI program. The first development phase is planned to reach a capacity of 100 MW.

Ballard Power Systems is supplying 32 fuel cell modules with a total output of 6.4 megawatts to eCap Marine. The modules are intended to power two zero-emission container ships operated by Samskip, which will run between Norway and the Netherlands.

The system provider Cytok, based in Rostock, Germany, has granted the Japanese company GPSS Engineering an exclusive license for its Power-to-Gas technology in Japan and Taiwan. A pilot project for market entry is planned for 2026.

The Indian chemical company TGV SRAAC is expanding its chlor-alkali plant in Kurnool by 50 percent. Once again, electrolyzer technology from Thyssenkrupp nucera will be used. The order includes three electrolyzers and an engineering package.

French hydrogen producer Lhyfe has launched its first crowdfunding campaign, raising €2.5 million. Around 1,200 citizens contributed to the financing of four production sites in France and Germany.

Thyssenkrupp Nucera has specified its revenue and earnings forecast for fiscal year 2024/2025. Despite a decline in order intake in the green hydrogen segment, the company maintains stable revenue expectations and slightly raises its EBIT forecast.

The Hamburg-based company eCap Marine is supplying hydrogen-based energy systems for two new vessel types. The clients are logistics group Samskip and Norwegian shipping company Møre Sjø. Commissioning is scheduled for 2027.

GP Joule and Keyou have entered into a strategic partnership to advance zero-emission hydrogen mobility in the heavy-duty transport sector. The cooperation includes both the provision of H2 trucks and the expansion of refueling infrastructure.

H2Apex has taken over the insolvent HH2E Werk Lubmin project. The site has grid connections and is considered strategically favorable for hydrogen production. A 100 MW plant is to be built by 2028 and later expanded to 1,000 MW.

The ITM Power subsidiary Hydropulse and the project developer Eternal Power have entered into a strategic partnership. The goal is to supply industrial customers in Germany with green hydrogen starting in summer 2025 – without upfront investments.

Thyssenkrupp Nucera is acquiring technology assets from the insolvent Danish company Green Hydrogen Systems. The high-pressure electrolysis is intended to accelerate the development of efficient AWE systems and strengthen Nucera’s position in the global hydrogen market.

Storengy Deutschland will receive up to €4.5 million from the EU’s Connecting Europe Facility funding programme. The funds will be allocated to preparatory studies for the SaltHy hydrogen storage project in Harsefeld. Commissioning is planned for 2032.

ABO Energy has commissioned its first hydrogen project in Hünfeld-Michelsrombach. The plant combines wind power, a 5 MW electrolysis plant and a hydrogen filling station. It is expected to produce up to 450 tons of certified green hydrogen per year.

Kumho Mitsui Chemicals (KMCI) has commissioned a new chlor-alkali plant with electrolyzers from thyssenkrupp Nucera in Yeosu, South Korea. The plant uses e-BiTAC v7 technology and enables the recovery of thin brine from MDI production.

The Norwegian state-owned energy company Statkraft is halting the development of new green hydrogen projects. For existing projects—including two electrolyzers in Emden, Germany—the company is seeking investors.

Hydrogen specialist H2Apex is expanding its activities in the field of chemical hydrogen storage through its subsidiary Akros Energy. Johannes Emigholz, an experienced software entrepreneur, has been appointed CEO and is expected to drive the development of innovative storage technologies.

Processes for the production, storage and use of hydrogen scaling, reducing costs and increasing efficiency: The trade fair Hydrogen + Fuel Cells Europe in Hannover is again proving the progress the hydrogen economy can show.

The transport transition is a central component of the German climate protection strategy. As part of this, hydrogen is seen as a key energy source, especially for heavy-duty goods vehicles. But how can hydrogen refueling stations (HRSs) be supplied with hydrogen efficiently, sustainably and economically? A joint study by the National Organisation Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology (NOW GmbH) and the German Energy Agency (dena) examines four supply options via a future H₂ pipeline network. In the study, H₂ hubs that act as connecting elements between the emerging H₂ network and the HRSs are of particular importance.

The Swiss company Infener wants to promote hydrogen throughout Europe. Decentralized H₂ hubs will be used to generate green electricity as well as green heat. The Ecore One is a compact containerized solution that combines various energy technologies in one unit: electrolyzer, fuel cell and battery as well as compressor and a heat pump with its own energy management system or EMS. H₂ production is due to start 2027 at a site in the Black Forest, Germany. However, the needs of regional industry are already far greater today.

In the electrolyzer sector, not only Enapter needed to bury its production plans in Saerbeck last year (see H2-international Jan. 2025). Quest One is also struggling and announced the dismissal of 120 employees in February 2025. Quest One had just, with a lot of pomp, opened the production hall in northern Hamburg last autumn (see H2-international Jan. 2025), but now has initiated a "program to strengthen the company's competitiveness" for the north.

With one of the largest hydrogen production facilities in Europe and the refueling center in Marl, the company not only supplies local companies, but also chemical sites throughout Nordrhein-Westfalen (NRW). As the H2EL hydrogen coordinator, we keep an eye on all projects in the region and their progress and create the necessary transparency regarding the market ramp-up through our regular monitoring. Our Hydrogen Roadmap 2024 is simultaneously a progress report, an inventory and an outlook on the development of the hydrogen economy in the Emscher-Lippe region.

Germany is at a crossroads: Is hydrogen the load-bearing pillar of our climate-neutral energy supply or does it remain a large, expensive promise? The political course of the coming months will decide whether we create a globally competitive hydrogen market – or whether Germany loses connection to international development. This was pondered with our members at the German hydrogen association Deutscher Wasserstoff-Verband (DWV). We therefore formulated and published recommendations before the election of the German parliament under the title "H2Five: Fünf vor 2030" (five before 2030).

Transport iron to use hydrogen: The new H₂ storage technology of Ambartec AG conveys iron granulates and obtains the hydrogen on site through oxidation. In mid-February 2025, Ambartec, together with Purem by Eberspächer, signed a cooperation agreement (MOU) to prepare a serial production of this iron-nugget hydrogen storage and for its transport in standard 20-foot containers.
