Nordic Ren-Gas and Sunfire announced a long-term partnership on July 22, 2026. Under the agreement, Sunfire will become the preferred technology partner for the Finnish developer's green hydrogen and e-methane projects. According to Ren-Gas, this strengthens the technological foundation for implementing further projects beyond the first initiative.
The new agreement builds on an existing collaboration. For Ren-Gas's e-methane plant in Tampere, Finland, Sunfire is already supplying a pressurized alkaline electrolyzer with a capacity of 50 megawatts. The project in Tampere combines renewable hydrogen with captured biogenic CO₂ to produce renewable methane, which is particularly intended for heavy-duty transport.
Basis is the new HyLink Alkaline 23
The foundation of the partnership is Sunfire's recently introduced HyLink Alkaline 23 system. According to Ren-Gas, this technology provides a basis for the economic implementation of hydrogen projects on an industrial scale. Saara Kujala, CEO of Nordic Ren-Gas, states: "Ren-Gas has established a fully European value chain for its first e-methane project in Tampere. This forms the basis for the production of competitive, renewable e-methane for the European road transport markets." The support of technology partners like Sunfire plays a crucial role in scaling production capacities across the entire project portfolio.
Nils Aldag, CEO of Sunfire, emphasizes: "Ren-Gas's decision to choose Sunfire as a long-term electrolysis partner underscores the trust in our technology, our team, and our implementation strength in large-scale hydrogen projects." The goal is to jointly advance the decarbonization of the industry and enable the economic production of e-methane on a large scale.
Further step in the Finnish hydrogen market
According to its own account, the agreement represents another step for Sunfire in the Finnish hydrogen market. The Dresden company had already supplied electrolysis technology for the first industrial large-scale project for green hydrogen in Finland at the Harjavalta site. Additionally, Sunfire electrolyzers are, according to company information, in use in other European large-scale projects in the three-digit megawatt range in Germany and Spain. Sunfire employs more than 700 people in Germany and manufactures industrial electrolyzers based on pressurized alkaline (AEL) and solid oxide technology (SOEC).
Billion-euro off-take agreement secures demand in Tampere
The partnership follows another milestone for Ren-Gas: At the beginning of July 2026, the company announced the conclusion of an off-take agreement for renewable e-methane with avanca/Alternoil worth around one billion euros. According to the company, the agreement is among the largest commercial e-methane agreements in Europe to date. It secures long-term demand for production at the Tampere site.
Nordic Ren-Gas is building a decentralized production network for renewable e-methane in Finland. The company develops projects according to the EU Renewable Energy Directive (RED), which converts renewable hydrogen and biogenic CO₂ into gas for heavy-duty transport, shipping, and other hard-to-decarbonize sectors. According to the company, the business model combines low-cost renewable electricity from Finland, methanation technology, and integration into district heating networks. Ren-Gas claims to have several fully approved e-methane production projects in its portfolio.
