Trelleborg Sealing Solutions presents its portfolio of sealing solutions for the entire hydrogen value chain at the Hydrogen Technology World Expo from October 20 to 22 in Hamburg. The focus of the trade fair appearance is the H2Pro portfolio with more than 20 sealing materials for the production, transport, storage, and end-use of hydrogen.
According to the company, the materials have been validated in proprietary testing procedures for the requirements of real hydrogen applications. According to Trelleborg, they are characterized by minimal hydrogen permeation, resistance to Rapid Gas Decompression (RGD), as well as abrasion and extrusion resistance. The materials can be used to produce frame seals, rubber-metal and rubber-plastic components, as well as multi-component solutions for valves, electrolysers, and fuel cell stacks.
New FlexiBond frame seal for electrolysers and fuel cells
As a novelty within the H2Pro range, Trelleborg introduces the FlexiBond sealing solution. This combines the properties of large-format frame seals with high dimensional stability and reduces the investment required for complex injection moulding systems, says James Simpson, Global Segment Director Energy at Trelleborg. "The solution opens up new design possibilities for electrolysers and fuel cells by combining the properties of large-format frame seals with high dimensional stability and reducing the required investment for complex injection moulding systems," says Simpson.
Seals for liquid hydrogen and electrolysis
For applications with liquid hydrogen at cryogenic temperatures, Trelleborg showcases the Turcon-Variseal portfolio made from high-performance polymers. The seals are designed for extreme pressure and temperature conditions and are available in various geometries – for both static and dynamic sealing tasks.
For the production of green hydrogen via electrolysis, the portfolio includes HMF-FlatSeal flat seals, frame seals, and rubber-metal composite seals. According to the manufacturer, these are designed for temperatures from +50 to +160 °C and pressures up to 80 bar and are suitable for all electrolyser technologies. Seals in electrolysis plants play a role in separating the produced hydrogen and oxygen and protecting the plant components from electrochemical attacks.
Test centre in the USA
For the development and testing of its hydrogen solutions, Trelleborg operates a 93 square metre test centre in Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA. Hydrogen leakage tests, rapid gas decompression investigations, compatibility tests, as well as dynamic tests and permeation tests are conducted there. According to the company, tests are possible at pressures up to 1,034 bar and in a temperature range from cryogenic conditions to over 180 °C. Additionally, pressure cycle tests can be conducted under various ambient temperature profiles.
