Hy2Infra project: Enertrag invests 300 million euros in Prenzlau

In July 2025, Enertrag signed the purchase agreement for a plot of land in Prenzlau. An electrolysis plant with an electrical connection capacity of 130 megawatts is to be built there. The plant is part of the European hydrogen funding program Hy2Infra, which is being implemented under the IPCEI (Important Projects of Common European Interest). According to the company, the notarized certification of the purchase agreement marks a key milestone.

The planned facility is expected to produce up to 12,500 tonnes of green hydrogen annually using 100 percent renewable electricity. The hydrogen is to be fed into the Flow pipeline, which is part of Germany’s core hydrogen network. Target markets include the steel, cement, glass and fertilizer industries, as well as mobility. In addition, several trailer filling stations are planned to enable flexible supply.

Use of existing infrastructure and industrial reuse

The production site will be integrated into an existing industrial hall. Enertrag aims to conserve resources and make industrial use of existing infrastructure. According to the company, the investment volume amounts to approximately 300 million euros. Up to 25 new jobs are expected to be created. The city of Prenzlau anticipates business tax revenues in the millions. Together with the municipal utility Stadtwerke Prenzlau, it is being examined whether the waste heat from the electrolysis plant can be fed into the city’s district heating network.

“With the securing of the site in Prenzlau, we are creating the conditions for industrial green hydrogen production directly at the source of renewable energy,” says Matthias König of Enertrag. The project demonstrates “how municipal cooperation and industrial innovation can work together to actively shape the transformation – ecologically, economically and socially.”

Water supply secured – approval phase to follow

The water supply and disposal for the plant will be coordinated with the municipal utility Stadtwerke Prenzlau. According to the company, the water demand will be fully covered by existing allocations and will have no impact on the general drinking water supply.

The project is currently in the technical basic planning phase. According to Enertrag, the next step will be the submission of the approval documents. The goal is to establish an industrial anchor point for green molecules in the Uckermark region in the coming years.
