The permits initially allow Mantle8 to conduct non-invasive investigations. Afterwards, the company has the option to transition to a full exploration license. The area is located on the southern flank of the Pyrenees. The geology is similar to that which Mantle8 has already investigated through its five-year Comminges license on the French side (reported by H2international).
According to the company, its own technologies Geologix (geological modeling), Horex (4D imaging), and Apogeh (evaluation of hydrogen systems) will be used. The data is to be evaluated with a proprietary technology platform to assess the potential for natural hydrogen deposits.
Region with industrial off-take potential for hydrogen
“Navarra and the Basque Country offer a rare combination of favorable geology and established infrastructure, in a region with strong industrial off-take potential,” says Emmanuel Masini, founder and CEO of Mantle8. They already have a good geological understanding of the region.
Masini also calls for clearer regulatory frameworks in Europe. The Spanish authorities have adapted existing rules for hydrocarbons to hydrogen, “but there is still work to be done.” From the company's perspective, natural hydrogen could become a strategic and sovereign resource for Europe – especially for sectors where electrification is not possible.
According to Mantle8, it completed a Series A financing round of 31 million euros in 2026. Additionally, it received 2.17 million euros in funding from the French government for the further development of its technology platform. Further permits in other countries are expected in the coming months.
