The Stadtwerke Stuttgart (SWS) have commenced civil engineering work for a hydrogen pipeline in the Stuttgart-Wangen district. The pipeline is part of the Green Hydrogen Hub Stuttgart, where green hydrogen is to be produced. In the first construction phase, the pipeline will extend approximately four kilometres along the Neckar and pass through the districts of Wangen, Hedelfingen, and Ost. According to the Stadtwerke, the construction work is expected to be completed within just one year. This means: routing, trenching, laying, and backfilling in rapid succession.
“We are pleased that the work on the pipeline, as a significant subproject of the Green Hydrogen Hub Stuttgart, is underway to advance the hydrogen project in the Stuttgart harbour. With the new pipeline, we are creating the necessary infrastructure for distributing our green high-purity hydrogen produced at the Green Hydrogen Hub,” says Peter Drausnigg, Technical Managing Director of Stadtwerke Stuttgart.
High-voltage cables are being laid in parallel
Stuttgart Netze GmbH, a subsidiary of Stadtwerke Stuttgart, is using the civil engineering work to simultaneously lay empty conduits for new 110 kV high-voltage cables in the pipeline route. Such cables connect large industrial plants to the supply network. “Through coordinated work, we are leveraging synergies that save costs and significantly reduce disruptions for residents and traffic,” says Marlies Hummel-Dietz, Commercial Managing Director of Stuttgart Netze.
1,200 tonnes of hydrogen per year at full capacity
The H2-GeNeSiS pipeline is a joint project of Stadtwerke Stuttgart, the Economic Development Region Stuttgart, Stadtwerke Esslingen, the Steinbeis Innovation Centre for Energy-Efficient and Emission-Free Technologies, and the Centre for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research Baden-Württemberg (ZSW). The Green Hydrogen Hub in the Stuttgart harbour is expected to produce up to 1,200 tonnes of high-purity green hydrogen per year at full capacity. According to Stadtwerke, distribution will occur via the new pipeline directly to connected consumers, alternatively by trailer via road.
Only electricity from solar and wind power will be used for production. The hydrogen will be certified according to Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO). The hydrogen projects of Stadtwerke Stuttgart are funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), the State of Baden-Württemberg, and the Stuttgart Region Association.
Stadtwerke Stuttgart is offering public information events at the start of construction on May 27 and June 8, 2026, from 2 PM to 6 PM, at the EnergiePlaza on Kesselstraße 23. Registration is possible at the following link: www.stadtwerke-stuttgart.de/wasserstoff-infoveranstaltung/.
