RNFBO certification for Abo Energy project: Green hydrogen from Hünfeld-Michelsrombach

The project company “Abo Wind Wasserstoff Michelsrombach” has received certification from TÜV under the CertifHy EU RNFBO Voluntary Scheme. This confirms that the hydrogen is produced exclusively using electricity from renewable energy sources. The electricity is supplied via power purchase agreements (PPAs) that are directly linked to the electrolyzer. The abbreviation RNFBO stands for “Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin”.

The certification allows the greenhouse gas (GHG) savings from hydrogen production to be credited toward the legally mandated GHG reduction quota. This makes the hydrogen particularly attractive for bus and logistics companies that are switching to low-emission propulsion systems.

5 MW electrolyzer with refueling station and trailer filling

The facility in Hünfeld-Michelsrombach consists of a 5-megawatt electrolyzer and a hydrogen refueling station with a trailer filling unit. It is designed for an annual production of up to 450 tonnes of green hydrogen. According to the company, the construction period was 13 months. The project received a total of twelve million euros in funding from the National Innovation Programme for Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology (NIP). The funds come from the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV) and are provided through the German Recovery and Resilience Plan (DARP) under the EU’s NextGenerationEU programme. Implementation is carried out by NOW GmbH and Project Management Jülich (PtJ).

Digital sustainability documentation with Hydromize

To calculate the carbon footprint of hydrogen production and to generate digital sustainability documentation, Abo Energy uses the “Hydromize” software developed by the company Greentrax. This solution creates a digital twin of the facility, which can also be used to simulate future production scenarios. The digital documentation is a prerequisite for participation in the GHG quota trading system, climate protection contracts, and tenders such as H2Global.

Greentrax actively supported the certification process – from preparing the audits and compiling the documentation to participating in the audit appointments. The partner company Abo Kraft & Wärme was also involved in the process.

“The certification underscores the pioneering role that Abo Energy plays in the renewable energy market. Even after almost 30 years, our company continues to take on new topics and challenges,” says Jochen Ahn, one of the two founders of Abo Energy.
