The Estonian tech company Stargate Hydrogen and Swedish project developer OX2 have formed a partnership to accelerate the rollout of large-scale electrolysers across Northern Europe. At the heart of the collaboration is a hydrogen project on the Åland Islands, set to be equipped with Stargate’s 10 MW Aurora electrolyser system.
Demonstrating the scalability of the new system
According to the companies, the plant will be among the largest hydrogen production sites in the Nordic region. It will run entirely on renewable energy and is intended to serve as a strategic hub for the hydrogen economy in Northern Europe. The technology is based on ceramic electrolysis and was developed entirely in Europe.
The facility is designed to supply hydrogen not only to local industry but also to the transport sector and shipping along designated green corridors. OX2 contributes its expertise in large-scale renewable energy projects to the partnership. “The Åland project will demonstrate both the scalability and cost competitiveness of our new system, positioning Åland as a centre for the Nordic hydrogen economy,” emphasises Marko Virkebau, CEO of Stargate Hydrogen.
€150 million in research funding
In parallel with the Åland project, both companies are participating in ABB’s “H₂ Springboard” programme, a national innovation initiative supported by more than €150 million in research funding. The aim is to jointly develop modular hydrogen solutions with strong export potential. Stargate Hydrogen and OX2 plan to contribute technology, infrastructure and expertise to accelerate market adoption.
Together, they aim to drive the development of a hydrogen ecosystem in Northern Europe. The agreement also marks the official market launch of Stargate Hydrogen’s industrial electrolysis platform, positioning the company as a provider of scalable solutions for decarbonising energy-intensive industries.
