Möhring Energie plans 1 GW hydrogen project in Mauritania

Mauritania and the German company Möhring Energie signed a framework agreement on November 18, 2025, in Nouakchott for the development of an industrial large-scale project for green hydrogen and ammonia. This is the first project by a German company officially agreed upon under the Mauritanian hydrogen strategy – the so-called "Hydrogen Code."

The project, named "Nayrah," is to be expanded gradually and reach an electrolysis capacity of up to 1 gigawatt (GW). This could produce up to 140,000 tonnes of green hydrogen and around 400,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually. The products are intended for export to Europe. According to the company, production is planned to start in 2029.

Political support and international cooperation

The agreement was signed by the Mauritanian Minister of Petroleum and Energy, Mohamed Ould Khaled, and Sascha Möhring, Managing Partner of Möhring Energie Group. The signing was accompanied by a delegation from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) led by Christian Rauh, Director for Africa.

Taghiya Abeiderahmane, Director of Low-Carbon Hydrogen at the Mauritanian Ministry of Energy, described the partnership as a "milestone for the development of the green hydrogen industry in Mauritania." The project demonstrates the trust of international investors and underscores the country's commitment to a sustainable energy economy.

Sascha Möhring emphasized Mauritania's location advantages: "Mauritania has outstanding conditions for the production of electricity from wind and sun – the foundation for globally competitive green molecules." The BMZ also welcomed the commitment. Christian Rauh said: "Such partnerships make an important contribution to the implementation of the global energy transition and to strengthening German-Mauritanian cooperation."
