Pajarito Powder, a company specializing in electrocatalysts for fuel cells and electrolyzers based in Albuquerque, New Mexico, has appointed Prof. Dr. Christian Mohrdieck as the new CEO. According to the company, Mohrdieck has been a member of the board since July 2020.
Mohrdieck Brings Decades of Experience from the Hydrogen Industry
Mohrdieck was previously Chief Technology Officer (CTO) at Hyzon Motors, Chief Commercial Officer (CCO) at Cellcentric, and CEO of Mercedes-Benz Fuel Cell. He holds a doctorate in physics and is an honorary professor at the University of Ulm and a lecturer at the Technical University of Vienna.
“After thirty years in this industry, one realization has crystallized: systems stand and fall with their foundations. In a fuel cell, this foundation is the catalyst; here, electrochemistry meets technical reality, and here, performance is either unleashed or permanently restricted," says Mohrdieck. “The work being done at Pajarito Powder on the fundamentals of catalyst technology is exactly the kind of investment the industry must make if we are to sustainably embark on the widespread use of hydrogen technologies."
Catalysts for PEM and AEM Electrolysis
Pajarito Powder develops and produces electrocatalysts for fuel cells and electrolyzers. The portfolio includes catalysts for PEM and AEM electrolysis applications (AEM = Anion Exchange Membrane), including OER and HER catalysts (Oxygen Evolution Reaction and Hydrogen Evolution Reaction, respectively). Additionally, the company offers catalyst solutions based on platinum group metals (PGM) on its proprietary "Engineered Catalyst Support" (ECS) platform.
Thomas Stephenson, Chairman of Pajarito Powder, says: “Christian brings a wealth of experience and knowledge in both fuel cells and electrolyzers, along with 35 years of experience in the automotive industry."
Investors in Pajarito Powder include Hyundai Motor Company, Bekaert, Ecovyst (a business unit of Technip Energies), and the Verge Fund.
