Construction start for French-German hydrogen pipeline

With a symbolic groundbreaking in Wallerfangen, Creos Deutschland celebrated the start of pipe and civil engineering works on August 28, 2026. The construction is being carried out by a consortium of Enrotec and Max Streicher, as reported by H2international. The planning approval decision for the German part of the project was granted in July 2026 and is now legally binding, according to the company.

The approximately 17-kilometre hydrogen pipeline between Leidingen and Dillingen forms the German section of the cross-border project moselle-saar-Hydrogen conversion (mosaHYc). It is intended to transport hydrogen from France towards Dillingen. The German project section is classified as an Important Project of Common European Interest (IPCEI) and is supported by the federal and state governments.

Cooperation with French Network Operator

MosaHYc is being developed in cooperation with the French network operator NaTran France. On the French side, around 20 kilometres of existing pipelines are to be converted to hydrogen, and five kilometres are to be newly constructed. The new French pipeline is to be built between Leidingen and Bouzonville.

In the long term, mosaHYc is to become part of a European hydrogen infrastructure. Through the German hydrogen core network and other European projects like HY4LINK and HYFEN, the transport of imported hydrogen from Northern Germany, the Iberian Peninsula, as well as via Luxembourg and Belgium, will be made possible. This will enable industrial large-scale consumers to be supplied with hydrogen from various production regions. In the Federal State of Saarland, the focus is particularly on the steel industry.

Rafael Sierra Garrido, also Managing Director of Creos Deutschland, emphasized the cross-border nature of the project: "This cross-border project can only succeed because people and companies are working towards a common goal across national borders. Especially in a time when international understanding is no longer taken for granted, this is a strong signal."

Second Transformation of the Network

Frank Gawantka, Managing Director of Creos Deutschland, says: "For our network, this is already the second transformation: In the seventies, we converted it from coke oven gas to natural gas; today we are beginning the conversion from natural gas to hydrogen." This will pave the way for a "future-proof, resilient, and more climate-neutral supply security."

Claude Seywert, CEO of the parent company Encevo, pointed to the role of hydrogen where electrification reaches its limits: "In the future energy supply, hydrogen will play a key role. Because not everywhere can industrial processes or heavy-duty transport be directly electrified." mosaHYc is "just the beginning of a hydrogen infrastructure in the Greater Region."

The Encevo subsidiary Creos Deutschland, based in Homburg-Saar, operates a high-pressure gas network of around 1,600 kilometres and a high and medium voltage network of around 400 kilometres in the Federal State of Saarland and Rhineland-Palatinate. The company is one of the operators of the German hydrogen core network.
