With the additional electrolyser, the planned total capacity of the Green Hydrogen Hub Stuttgart (GH2S) in the Stuttgart port increases from nine to twelve megawatts. The expansion is running under the project name GH2Splus. The federal state of Baden-Württemberg is located in the South West of Germany.
The expansion is financed through the state funding programme for electrolysers (ELY) of the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of the Environment. Environment Minister Thekla Walker presented Stadtwerke with a grant notification of approximately 2.9 million euros.
According to Peter Drausnigg, Technical Managing Director of Stadtwerke Stuttgart, the modular structure with four electrolysers is intended to enable a "finely scalable, economical, and grid-friendly operation." The goal is to optimally use green electricity, meet industrial requirements, and secure the regional hydrogen supply.
The Green Hydrogen Hub is currently under construction. After commissioning, up to 1,200 tonnes of high-purity green hydrogen are to be produced annually from green electricity. The facility also includes a transport infrastructure in the Neckar Valley.
GH2S is part of the joint project H2 GeNeSiS, which is supported by the EU and the Federal State of Baden-Württemberg. In addition to Stadtwerke Stuttgart, the Economic Development Region Stuttgart, Stadtwerke Esslingen, the Steinbeis Innovation Centre for Energy-Efficient and Emission-Free Technologies, and the Centre for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research Baden-Württemberg are involved.
