The Bundesrat has approved the implementation of the European Renewable Energy Directive RED III into German law. The corresponding law had previously been passed by the Bundestag, the Federal Parliament of Germany. After publication in the Federal Law Gazette, the regulation can come into force.
The law introduces, among other things, a mandatory sub-quota for so-called Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO). Refineries will thus be required to use a specified share of renewable hydrogen or energy carriers produced from it.
According to Luc Garé, CEO of hydrogen producer Lhyfe, this would initially create a demand for around 19,000 tonnes of RFNBO hydrogen in Germany. By 2032, demand could rise to about 600,000 tonnes according to company estimates.
The RFNBO quota is part of the European RED III directive, with which the EU aims to accelerate the use of renewable energies in the transport and industrial sectors.
