AI needs hydrogen

Who noticed that Jensen Huang is calling for H2 investments?
According to Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of NVIDIA, artificial intelligence (AI) is currently bringing about fundamental changes on five levels: energy, chips, infrastructure, models and applications. What is remarkable is what is named first: energy. Without it, neither chips and data centers nor AI models and applications function. If Huang is right with his vision of AI factories, AI will cause demand not only for computing power to explode, but also for energy.
In June, Huang was a guest at Sequoia Capital, one of the most renowned venture capital firms in Silicon Valley. There he explained his model and called the energy level the “biggest opportunity in several generations” for the energy industry, in particular for investments in sustainable energy.
Huang explicitly names the technologies: nuclear energy, wind power, solar energy, and hydrogen.
Of course, Huang is not saying that hydrogen will secure the energy supply for AI on its own. But he makes clear: the build-up of AI infrastructure will trigger enormous investments in new energy generation and infrastructure.
This is where we as the hydrogen industry should look and seek business opportunities. One strength of hydrogen is its ability to store large amounts of energy and provide them as needed.
In this, two megatrends come together: AI needs ever more energy; the energy transition needs solutions to store, transport and flexibly provide renewable energy.
By the way, the newest OpenAI model “Astra 6” is also convinced that hydrogen plays an important role in building a sustainable energy supply. Feel free to ask!
