Rainer Böse appointed new CEO of Arcelor Mittal Germany

Arcelor Mittal has appointed Rainer Böse as the new CEO of the national subsidiary Arcelor Mittal Germany. Böse is taking on this new role in addition to his current position as Chairman of the Management Board at the Bremen and Eisenhüttenstadt plants.

The 57-year-old has been with the group for many years. Most recently, from 2017 until May 2025, he served as Chief Marketing Officer for the industrial customer business of Arcelor Mittal Europe – Flat Products in Northern Europe.

In an initial statement, Böse emphasized the importance of the workforce at the German sites: “I know what we can achieve together when we pull in the same direction. That’s how we will tackle the challenges ahead.”

Böse sees the industry under considerable pressure. Demand for European steel is weak, while there is unfair competition due to high import volumes. He criticizes the lack of competitive conditions in terms of energy and CO2 costs compared to countries outside Europe.

With regard to the transformation of steel production, Böse is calling for political support: “Politics must act now. It’s not five to twelve anymore, it’s already past twelve! Only if the framework conditions allow it can we invest in the next steps toward the climate-neutral transformation of steel production.”

With around eight million tonnes of crude steel per year, Arcelor Mittal is one of the largest steel producers in Germany. The company operates four major production sites: two integrated flat steel plants in Bremen and Eisenhüttenstadt, and two long steel plants in Hamburg and Duisburg. In total, Arcelor Mittal employs around 9,100 people in Germany.

Globally, Arcelor Mittal is active in 60 countries. In 2024, the group generated revenues of 62.4 billion US dollars and produced 57.9 million tonnes of crude steel.

The climate-neutral transformation of steel production is a key issue for Arcelor Mittal. In Germany, the company is planning investments in hydrogen-based processes to reduce CO2 emissions. According to the company, this requires competitive electricity prices and a functioning carbon border adjustment mechanism.
