Cytok grants exclusive license for Power-to-Gas technology to GPSS in Japan and Taiwan

The German Power-to-Gas specialist Cytok has signed an exclusive license agreement with the Japanese company GPSS Engineering. GPSS thereby receives the sole usage rights for Cytok’s patented technology in Japan and Taiwan. The goal is to enter the Japanese market and jointly develop additional Asian markets.

The agreement is part of a partnership that has existed since 2023. As early as May 2023, both companies signed a cooperation agreement. In November of the same year, they followed up with a letter of intent to establish a joint venture for the Asia-Pacific region. Since 2024, GPSS employees have been certified for the installation of the systems.

Technology converts CO2 and hydrogen into synthetic methane

Cytok’s Power-to-Gas systems first convert surplus electricity from renewable sources into green hydrogen. In a specially developed reactor, this hydrogen is then combined with CO2 to produce synthetic methane (SNG). The SNG can be stored, transported, and reconverted into electricity and heat as needed.

According to the company, a key feature is the closed gas loop: the CO2 generated during combustion is fully recirculated and reused. As a result, no emissions or particulate matter are produced. According to Cytok, the overall efficiency of the renewable energy used is up to 85 percent. This is made possible by integrated heat recovery and intelligent energy management.

Pilot project planned for 2026

An initial pilot project to demonstrate the technology is planned for 2026 in Japan. The background is the national strategy to gradually replace fossil natural gas with synthetic methane starting in 2030. By 2050, the share of e-methane in the existing gas grid is to rise to 90 percent.

“Our close cooperation with GPSS and the exclusive license agreement underline the international relevance and technological uniqueness of Cytok’s Power-to-Gas technology,” says Martin Weiss, Managing Director of Cytok GmbH. Compatibility with the existing natural gas infrastructure is a key advantage for international scaling.

GPSS Engineering is a developer of decentralized energy projects in Japan and other Asian countries. The company focuses on local integration and resilient supply systems. Cytok was founded in 2023 and offers emission-free Power-to-Gas systems for buildings and industry.
