Moeve has celebrated the groundbreaking ceremony for the Andalusian Green Hydrogen Valley in Palos de la Frontera (Huelva), Europe’s largest project to date for renewable hydrogen.
The first expansion stage bears the name “Onuba” and will comprise an electrolysis capacity of 300 MW at the Moeve Energy Park in Huelva, with an option for a further 105 MW. The annual production capacity is around 45,000 metric tons of green hydrogen, which corresponds to an avoidance of approximately 250,000 metric tons of CO2 per year. The investment volume of the first phase amounts to more than one billion euros.
Moeve holds a majority stake of 51 percent. New partners are Hy24, the world’s largest private equity manager specializing in clean hydrogen, and the Spanish public-private development institution COFIDES. Together they hold 29 percent. The remaining 20 percent is shared between Enagás Renovable and Alter Enersun.
The project has been classified by the EU as a “Project of Common Interest” (PCI) and is receiving 304 million euros from the Spanish Recovery Plan, financed via NextGenerationEU. The hydrogen produced is to support in particular the more sustainable production of fuels for road, air and sea transport, as well as the decarbonization of further industries.
In the long term, the Andalusian Green Hydrogen Valley is designed for a total capacity of 2 GW, distributed across sites in Huelva and San Roque (Cádiz). Together with a second-generation biofuels plant that is also under construction, Moeve is investing a total of 2.4 billion euros in Andalusia, with the aim of developing Palos de la Frontera into Europe’s largest green molecules hub.
