Lhyfe has signed a multi-year contract with the BMW Group to supply green hydrogen to the Austrian site in Steyr. The company, headquartered in Nantes, announced this. These are Lhyfe's first deliveries to Austria. The company handles the transport with its own fleet of tankers.
Fuel cell development for BMW X5
At the Steyr site, the BMW Group is preparing for series production of fuel cell systems for the new BMW X5 model, according to its own statements. The model is a large and powerful SUV. Hydrogen pilot vehicles in this class with fuel cells from Toyota were brought to the road by BMW in 2023 under the name iX5 Hydrogen. The drive of the pilot vehicles had an output of 295 kW, with BMW stating a range of 504 kilometers at the time.
From 2028, the third generation hydrogen drive system is to be manufactured. Previous versions and prototypes were developed in Munich. The hydrogen supplied by Lhyfe is to be used for series development, industrialization, as well as for testing and validation purposes. Thus, BMW continues to adhere to hydrogen passenger cars against the trend. Most car manufacturers have reduced their hydrogen ambitions to lighter vehicles with the advancement of battery technology. Several hydrogen filling stations for passenger cars have been closed in Germany.
Production capacity of 8.5 tons per day
Lhyfe has been producing green hydrogen since 2021 and operates four production sites in France and Germany. According to the company, the total capacity is up to 8.5 tons of green hydrogen per day. By the end of the year, two more sites in France are to be put into operation. In 2025, the company carried out more than 850 deliveries in Europe according to its own statements. All operational production sites are RFNBO-certified (Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin) according to EU standards.
Lhyfe is active in eleven European countries and employed 188 people as of December 31, 2025, according to its own statements. The company is listed on Euronext in Paris.
