The Norwegian hydrogen company Vireon is getting a new leader. The supervisory board has appointed Vegard Frihammer as the new CEO. Frihammer already joined the company on August 1. He will formally assume the role of CEO on September 1, 2026.
Frihammer comes from Corvus Energy Fuel Cell, where he was Vice President Business Development. Previously, he held several leadership positions in the energy sector, including as Group CEO of Greenstat. He succeeds Per Øyvind Voie, who has led Vireon since its founding. Voie is leaving the company to take a position outside the hydrogen industry.
Chairman of the Supervisory Board points to industry experience
The chairman of the supervisory board, Knut Flakk, justifies the personnel decision with the experience of the new CEO. "We are very pleased that Vegard Frihammer has accepted the opportunity to lead Vireon. He brings extensive experience from the hydrogen and energy sector, including as Group CEO of Greenstat, and has developed companies and new green value chains for many years," said Flakk. The supervisory board is convinced that Frihammer is the right person to lead Vireon into the next phase.
According to company statements, Frihammer himself emphasizes the company's potential, particularly in the area of hydrogen refueling. "Vireon has built an exciting platform with projects and activities in several Nordic countries and plays a particularly important role as a downstream hydrogen company," says Frihammer. The demand for refueling solutions for heavy-duty transport, shipping, and construction machinery will grow in the coming years.
Hydrogen infrastructure in five Nordic countries
Vireon is headquartered in Ålesund, Norway, and has subsidiaries in Finland, Sweden, Denmark, and Iceland. The company is working on several projects in the areas of hydrogen infrastructure, distribution, and production. The largest shareholders include the Flakk Group, Hexagon Purus, Fortescue, Hofseth International, and Tafjord Kraftproduksjon.
Under Voie's leadership, Vireon has, according to the supervisory board, built a project portfolio and established activities in several Nordic countries. The company was initially part of Norwegian Hydrogen and later became independent.
