Finland's first commercial hydrogen refuelling station receives Asahi Kasei electrolyser

The Japanese technology group Asahi Kasei is installing a containerised alkaline water electrolyser in Finland's first commercial hydrogen refuelling station in Jyväskylä. The Aqualyzer-C3 system has a capacity of 1 MW. According to the company, it is expected to produce 400 kg of hydrogen daily – enough to refuel approximately three fuel cell vehicles per hour on average.

Operations planned to start in summer 2026

The operator of the electrolyser is Cefmof Hydrogen, a subsidiary of the Central Finland Mobility Foundation (Cefmof). Asahi Kasei had already announced the delivery of the electrolyser to Cefmof in July 2025. Operations are to commence in summer 2026. Cefmof plans to use the generated hydrogen to expand the local infrastructure for hydrogen-powered vehicles. The project is intended to serve as a model case for hydrogen use in cold climates.

Asahi Kasei relies on a multimodular approach

Kenji Takeda, Executive Officer of Asahi Kasei and responsible for the hydrogen business, said: "This milestone supports the development of the hydrogen ecosystem in Central Finland. Furthermore, this is an important step to demonstrate the reliability and scalability of our water electrolysis technology." Lauri Perämäki, Deputy Board Member of Cefmof Hydrogen, added: "This is a significant milestone, as currently only a limited number of hydrogen production facilities are in operation in Finland. Cefmof Hydrogen is among the first operators in Finland to use a containerised alkaline water electrolysis system of this scale for hydrogen production."

According to its own statements, Asahi Kasei has more than 50 years of experience in industrial chlor-alkali electrolysis. The company pursues a multimodular approach, connecting several alkaline water electrolysers of the Aqualyzer type with a capacity of 10 MW. Pilot projects in Fukushima and Kawasaki are said to have confirmed the reliability of the technology under commercial operating conditions. In 2024, Asahi Kasei expanded its portfolio to include Aqualyzer-C3 electrolysers with capacities ranging from 1 MW to 7.5 MW.
