Hydrogen motorsport aims to contribute expertise to the UK’s Hydrogen value chain

The hydrogen racing series Extreme H has joined the UK industry association Hydrogen UK. The aim is to use motorsport as a platform for research, technology development and public acceptance of hydrogen.

The hydrogen racing series Extreme H has become a member of the UK industry association Hydrogen UK. The membership is intended to help transfer insights from motorsport into the development and scaling of hydrogen technologies in the United Kingdom.

According to its own statements, Extreme H is the world’s first off-road racing series to rely entirely on hydrogen propulsion. It uses the specially developed fuel cell vehicle “Pioneer 25”. The energy supply for the events is also based on hydrogen. The series sees itself as a “live laboratory” for hydrogen mobility and green logistics.

“Extreme H will be a global platform to showcase what hydrogen can deliver under high-pressure and high-performance conditions,” said Ali Russell, Managing Director of Extreme H. The goal is to “push the boundaries of the technology, build trust in hydrogen solutions and accelerate the path to net zero.”

Hydrogen UK is an industry-led association with over 120 members across the entire hydrogen value chain – from production to storage, transport and application in industry and mobility. The organisation aims to drive the expansion of hydrogen infrastructure in the United Kingdom.

According to Clare Jackson, CEO of Hydrogen UK, motorsport can serve as a driver of innovation: “Extreme H demonstrates that hydrogen is high-performing while also raising public awareness of the technology.”

The racing series is an evolution of the existing electric off-road series Extreme E. In addition to technological goals, Extreme H also pursues socio-political objectives: all teams are required to field an equal number of male and female drivers.
