Hydrogen Europe Research honours young talents in hydrogen research

Five young researchers from Europe were honoured with the Young Scientist Award by Hydrogen Europe Research on November 24, 2025. The award ceremony took place during the EU Hydrogen Research and Innovation Days in Brussels.

The competition has been held annually since 2018 and recognises outstanding contributions by young researchers in the field of hydrogen and fuel cells. Eligible participants are scientists up to the age of 35 who are affiliated with member institutions of Hydrogen Europe Research. This year, 42 researchers from 34 institutions in 15 countries participated.

The awards are based on the four pillars of the Clean Hydrogen Partnership, the central EU funding programme for hydrogen technologies. Additionally, a special prize for the best young researcher of the year was awarded.

The 2025 award winners are:

Filipp Temerov (University of Oulu, Finland) in the category of hydrogen production

Marco Maggini (University of Tuscia, Italy) in the category of storage and distribution

Marcos López Juárez (Universitat Politècnica de València, Spain) in the category of utilisation

Federica Tamburini (University of Bologna, Italy) in the category of cross-cutting issues

Xinyi Wei (École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne, Switzerland) as "Best Researcher of the Year"

Each awardee received 1,000 euros and a trophy. The selection was made by the Executive Board of Hydrogen Europe Research.

EU Commissioner for Start-ups, Research and Innovation, Ekaterina Zaharieva, praised the achievements of the awardees: "Their work advances clean hydrogen technologies and strengthens Europe's leadership in one of the most promising energy sectors of our time."

Luigi Crema, President of Hydrogen Europe Research, emphasised: "The Young Scientist Award is more than an accolade – it stands for visibility, trust in the next generation, and motivation to contribute to the implementation of European hydrogen goals."

Parallel to the awarding of the Young Scientist Award, the Clean Hydrogen Partnership Awards 2025 were also presented. Both award ceremonies are part of the EU Hydrogen Research and Innovation Days, taking place on November 24 and 25, 2025, in Brussels.
