Built by the Dutch shipyard Feadship, the "Breakthrough" is, according to Air Products, the first vessel of its kind to feature an integrated 3.2 MW hydrogen fuel cell propulsion system.
The vessel carries the build number 821. Jan-Bart Verkuyl, CEO of Feadship Royal Van Lent Shipyard, describes the integration of liquid hydrogen into the yacht's overall system as "groundbreaking." The first refueling with liquid hydrogen took place in March, with Air Products citing two specific dates: March 2 and March 22. The double-walled cryogenic tank has a capacity of up to four metric tons, or 92 cubic meters, of liquid hydrogen.
MAN Cryo is also on board when it comes to the tank technology. Sofia Liedholm, Engineering Manager Design & Project at MAN Cryo, calls the application a "milestone for maritime shipping." She states that the project demonstrates "that storing liquid hydrogen below deck for use as marine fuel is now a reality." The refueling took place in Amsterdam, where the port is preparing to become a "multi-fuel hub."
