Synhelion has signed a memorandum of understanding with several Moroccan ministries and the investment agency AMDIE for the construction of a production plant for renewable synthetic fuels. The plant is to be built in the province of Tan-Tan in the Guelmim-Oued Noun region and, according to the company, will produce 100,000 tonnes of fuel annually. Synhelion does not provide specific details on the investment volume, schedule, or start of construction of the plant in Tan-Tan. Tan-Tan is located in southern Morocco near the border with the internationally disputed Western Sahara, but itself is undisputedly part of Moroccan territory.
The agreement involves the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, the Ministry of Investment, and the Moroccan Agency for Investment and Export Development (AMDIE). According to Synhelion, a plot of land has been reserved for the project, and a branch office, Synhelion Morocco, has been established. This has received the status of Casablanca Finance City, a location for international companies in Morocco.

With this step, "we are moving from evaluation to concrete project development," says Gianluca Ambrosetti, Co-CEO and co-founder of Synhelion. The demonstration plant "Dawn" has been operational since 2024. The company had originally announced the commissioning of the first commercial plant in Spain for 2027. Instead, since July 2026, it has been stated that this will be built in Jülich near the Dawn plant, funded with 90 million euros from EU funds. Further locations are under review, according to Synhelion.
Karim Zidane, Moroccan Minister for Investment, Convergence, and the Evaluation of Public Policy, explains: "Building on the great potential for renewable energies in the Guelmim-Oued Noun region, this project can help create new value chains, open up local economic opportunities, and strengthen the Kingdom's position as a competitive location for green industry.
Synhelion produces synthetic kerosene, diesel, and gasoline from renewable energy and biogenic waste. The production process was explained by H2international here. The fuels are designed as drop-in fuels.
