Laufenberg and Wevo present roll-to-roll process for hydrogen-compatible flat gaskets

In the new process, specially developed two-component elastomers from Wevo-Chemie are applied in liquid form to a carrier film. The coating is carried out using Laufenberg’s roll-to-roll technology. Curing takes place in a multi-zone tunnel oven, whose temperature zones can be individually adjusted to suit the material. Optionally, pre-curing with infrared emitters can be used to shorten curing time and eliminate air inclusions. The production speed is scalable and ranges from 0.5 to 50 meters per minute.

The process enables the production of pure elastomer gaskets with layer thicknesses from 20 micrometers to 2 millimeters. In combination with carrier films, hybrid gaskets with a total thickness of 70 micrometers to 4 millimeters are possible. The choice of elastomer and carrier film depends on the specific application. The gaskets are delivered either as roll stock or as precisely cut individual parts.

Laufenberg contributes many years of experience in coating silicone materials. For years, Wevo has been developing special silicones and modified polyurethanes with low hydrogen permeation, which are already used as liquid gaskets and adhesives in fuel cell and electrolyser stacks. According to the companies, the new process is expected to reduce manufacturing costs and enable automated, scalable production.

Laufenberg will be exhibiting at the Hydrogen Technology Expo in Hamburg from October 21 to 23 in Hall B5, Booth 5H85. Wevo-Chemie will be exhibiting at hy-fcell in Stuttgart from October 7 to 8 in Hall 4, Booth 4C38.
