The Onuba project in Spain

Moeve and Thyssenkrupp Nucera sign contract for 300 MW electrolysis plant in Huelva

Thyssenkrupp Nucera and Moeve have signed a contract covering the engineering, procurement, manufacturing and delivery of electrolysis equipment. Under the agreement, Thyssenkrupp Nucera will deliver 15 standardised electrolysers, each rated at 20 MW, for a total capacity of 300 MW. The plant is expected to produce around 45,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year and reduce CO₂ emissions by approximately 250,000 tonnes annually.

First phase of the "Andalusian Green Hydrogen Valley"

The project, named Onuba, forms part of the "Andalusian Green Hydrogen Valley" that Moeve is developing at the La Rábida Energy Park in Huelva, Spain. Onuba represents the first phase of this plan. Moeve announced the final investment decision (FID) for the project in early March. The plant will use Thyssenkrupp Nucera's alkaline water electrolysis technology.

Southern Spain's locational advantage for green hydrogen

"The Iberian Peninsula offers one of Europe's greatest opportunities for large-scale green hydrogen production. Onuba demonstrates that major green hydrogen projects can move forward and reach final investment decision even in volatile markets, provided the right framework conditions are in place," said Werner Ponikwar, CEO of Thyssenkrupp Nucera. Maarten Wetselaar, CEO of Moeve, added: "Together with its partners, Moeve is establishing a strategic clean energy hub in southern Spain to strengthen Europe's energy and industrial resilience."

According to the company, the site in southern Spain benefits from abundant solar and wind resources. Strategic port infrastructure and existing transport corridors will connect supply with industrial demand in northern Europe.
