Efforts to transform the energy sector have so far focused on increasing renewable generation capacity to lay the foundation for a future energy system. This has made the use of electricity in the heat and transportation markets all the more important, since electric power is an efficient means of generating and using renewable sources of energy.

ZSW, the Center for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research, has seen the addition of a new building in the state capital of Baden-Württemberg, Stuttgart, Germany. It was officially inaugurated on July 5 in the presence of the state’s economy minister, Nicole Hoffmeister-Kraut, and the mayor of Stuttgart, Fritz Kuhn. The expansion is said to house new analytical and coating equipment for PV systems in addition to power-to-gas storage units.

ESE and IRES Become One

IRES-LogoMesse Düsseldorf and the European Association for Renewable Energy (EUROSOLAR) agreed at the end of last October to work together more closely in the future. They signed a collaboration agreement to better link the International Renewable Energy Storage Conference (IRES) with the Energy Storage Europe (ESE). The tenth year since its inception will see IRES – which is considered by its organizers to be the “leading conference on research and social aspects of energy storage” – merge with ESE, a conference primarily focused on economic and financial issues. Europe’s first research facility to test the storage opportunities for hydrogen at former natural gas reservoirs was inaugurated last fall in Austria’s city of Pilsbach. BMW Presents New 5 Series Boasting Fuel-Cell Engine

This summer car manufacturer BMW presented a new vehicle driven by a fuel cell. In Miramar in the south of France, the Bavarian company revealed their new BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo (GT) on the first of July 2015. The car is a showcase vehicle, which was developed in cooperation with Toyota and is planned for mass production by 2020. (more…)
