Support for hydrogen came from unexpected quarters in 2021. British luxury vehicle manufacturer Jaguar reported last June that its Land Rover brand would be developing a prototype of a hydrogen-powered Defender. CEO Thierry Bolloré had previously announced plans to decarbonize all vehicle models by 2036 as part of his Reimagine strategy. However, the first all-electric version of an SUV is not due to launch until 2024 at the earliest. Nick Rogers, who heads up JLR’s product development, told vision mobility magazine: “It’s absolutely really, really important; we truly believe that hydrogen has a real place and opportunity, particularly in the bigger vehicles.” (more…)

Plug Power is benefiting from the fact that a variety of analysts view the company to be a front-runner in an American hydrogen economy in 2023/24 and one that should be very well positioned to produce green hydrogen through the development of its own electrolyzer capacity in the longer term. In nine years’ time, a revenue of USD 9 billion may even be possible. Until then, a hydrogen price of USD 1 per kilogram should be achievable, according to Evercore analyst James West. (more…)

Almost exactly one month before the federal election, Federal Minister of Transport Andreas Scheuer gave the go-ahead for the establishment first of the office and then of the German Centre for Future Mobility (DZM) he is planning in Munich. After years of silence regarding Opel’s fuel cell activities, the German automobile manufacturer came back in mid-May 2021 with an H2 van Vivaro-e Hydrogen – and with it the French sister companies Peugeot and Citroën, both of which also belong to the parent company Stellantis. The major corporation designed its own “mid-power plug-in hydrogen fuel cell electric system” for the three brands, consisting of a 100-kW drive combined with a 45-kW fuel cell from the French manufacturer Symbio and a high-voltage power storage unit.
